These self-portraits date back to the beginning of my career in the 1970s and have been featured in three one-woman shows. One of them, Self-portrait with Afghan Hat (1997) was given the Thomas R. Proctor Award at the 1998 National Academy Museum Annual Exhibition and discussed by Ken Johnson in his April 10th review in the New York Times: “The most affecting works tend to be the less sensational ones, the ones that don’t try to bowl you over through showy technique or flamboyant imagery…Wendy Lewis gives her own face a plain yet sensuously painterly immediacy. In such works, alert looking and deft execution make visible the poetry of ordinary things.”
